Inhalt:

The molecular basis for the biological function of ion transporters will be discussed. A focus is on systems for active and passive transport of Na+, K+ and Ca2+.
Topics:
- The electrochemical membrane potential
- Physiological relevance of Na+, K+, Ca2+
- Primary producers of the electrochemical potential (cation pumps)
- How channels work/how to study channels
- Voltage- versus ligand-gated channels
- Structure-function analysis of ion transporters
- Comparing transport rates and ion selectivities of different systems
