Professional competences:

With completion of the course, students:
- will be familiar with the current state of sociological debates concerning farm animal welfare
- are able to recognize different underlying concepts and definitions of animal welfare in current societal debates
- appreciate and understand the role of institutions in the formation of different forms of collaboration and agreements between stakeholders to ensure animal welfare
- can distinguish between different epistemological philosophies (critical rationalism vs. social constructivism) and apply this knowledge to analyse societal disputes concerning animal welfare
- have factual knowledge about the origin of the legal framework of animal production and trade standards in different countries
- are able to critically reflect on international trade and production standards
- have gained methods and tools to analyse and understand the socio-cultural dimension of animal production standards in Western and non-Western societies
- are able to analyse and assess the role of media and public communication in debates concerning farm animal welfare issues
-can asses and critically analyse controversial societal debates concerning human-animal interactions.

Key competences:

After completing the course students will:
- be aware of factors influencing decision making processes
- be able to distinguish how different opinions are formed and the role of different value systems therein
- have gained problem solving tools to recognize and analyse farm animal welfare issues
- be able to bridge the gap between social and natural sciences
- have acquired argumentation, listening and debating skills
- have increased their group work skills
- have improved their writing skills.
