Prerequisites for Attendance:

Measurement, Modelling and Data Assimilation I, Measurement, Model-ling and Data Assimilation II in parallel to this module, basic courses of the first semester

Sprache:
English
ECTS:
6 credits
Frequency:
every winter semester
Length of the Module:
1 semester
Module examination:
Written exam
Length of the examination:
120 minutes
Workload:

56 h attendance + 124 h independent study = 180 h workload

Professional competences:

State-of-the-art numerical weather prediction is not possible without data assimilation. In this module, the students learn the theoretical framework on which all modern assimilation methods are based. With this, the knowledge about the different observations gained in earlier modules as Measuring, Modelling, Data Assimilation I or Remote Sensing is complemented by the methodology to combine them with state-of-the-art numerical models.
Furthermore, the different methods from the variational approach to Kalman filtering and nonlinear methods as the particle filter will be dis-cussed in detail together with their advantages and disadvantages, so that the students are capable to select the method best suited for their application in other areas of earth system research.

Key competences:

Due to the practical computer work additional competences are taught e.g. in programming, analysis and visualization of observations and model data.
