State-of-the-art numerical weather prediction is not possible without data assimilation. In this module, the students learn the theoretical framework on which all modern assimilation methods are based.
Furthermore, the different methods from the variational approach to Kalman filtering and nonlinear methods as the particle filter will be dis-cussed in detail together with their advantages and disadvantages, so that the students are capable to select the method best suited for their application in other areas of earth system research.
