This lecture is an introductory course to health economics. At first, the focus of study is on the characteristics of the market for health services. We will study to what extent and why the health market exhibits special circumstances and modes of action and which role the institutions of medical care play in this context. Furthermore, we study the behaviour of consumers, that is, individuals and especially the conditions under which the individual acts as a "producer" of his own health. From the consumer's point of view, what are the conditions which determine the optimal allocation of his resources to health and other goods? Finally, different methods of evaluation in the health-care sector are extensively discussed using microeconomic principles, namely the cost-utility and the cost-benefit analysis. This course provides exercise sessions in which a more in-depth analysis of the topics discussed in the lecture takes place.
