The role of money in the market economy, the activities of the banks, as well as the pricing of securities and foreign exchange market is investigated. In light of this background, the functioning of monetary policy instruments is clarified. A "new consensus" in macroeconomics does not view the money supply but the interest rate as the main instument of monetary policy. The behaviour of the central bank is described by interest policy reaction functions.
