Regional policies play a very important role in the EU member countries and especially the EU Commission. The increase of welfare in the regions and the catch-up of underdeveloped regions is to be accomplished by attaining innovation goals. The economic competetiveness of a region is closely related to the knowledge infrastructure of a region and its knowledge base. Thus, regional policy measures aim at the regional innovation potential for the long-term increase of the per capita income: In the lecture, the most important economic theories of regional development are presented and applied to the increasing divergence of the regional per capita income in Europe.
