This module will be of particular interest for students who intend to choose the "Food and Nutrition Security" and/or the "Gender, Nutrition and Right-to-Food" module because it provides the basic knowledge in Global Nutrition and important Public Health issues.

Fachkompetenzen:

Students can analyse the complexity of the interrelationship between nutrition and health in particular in the case of vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, children and elderly. In addition, they can analyse the specific health and nutritional situation in emergency situations and can elaborate general recommendations to avoid further nutritional deterioration.
Some of the relevant topics are listed below:
Introduction to the worldwide nutrition situation;
Nutrition and infectious diseases including HIV-Aids; Health and nutrition in transition; Assessment of nutritional status; Evolution of hospital- and community-based management of malnutrition; Nutritional requirements of pregnant and lactating women; Evidence-based breastfeeding and complementary feeding; Nutrition in emergency situations; Micronutrient deficiencies – hidden hunger; The hidden hunger paradox – malnutrition and obesity

Schlüsselkompetenzen:

During and after the presentations of the lecturers the students will be motivated to improve their analytical and evidence based argumentation on the basis of their cultural competence and scientific journal-based literature.

In addition, during the work in small groups the students will be able to inhance their intercultural teamwork capacity, organisation, presentation and time management skills.
