The revolution in genome sequencing technologies allows to analyze and use vast amounts of genetic diversity in plant crops. The amount of sequencing and genoyping data available for both major and minor crops enables competely new approaches to plant breeding by mining of useful genetic variation in genetic resources, identifying genomic regions under selection in breeding programs and using genome-wide marker information for predicting phenotypes. These large amounts of data raise new challenges for the analysis and require novel computational and statistical skills.
The ‘Big Data’ analysis of genomic information in the context of plant breeding will be the subject of a one-week summer school in August 2017. The summer school will provide an introduction into the computational environment for data analysis such as Linux, Python and R and downstream statistical analyses using bioinformatics, population genetic and quantitative genomic approaches. Of particular importance is to demonstrate how these methods can be used in the characterization of plant genetic resources and in the application in plant breeding programs. - Anmerkungen:

Summer school initiated by ELLS Subject Area in Plant Molecular Breeding and Biotechnology. It will take place from 6 - 12 August 2017 at the University of Hohenheim. Deadline for application: March 31, 2017 or until places are filled via http://www.euroleague-study.org/plantbreeding-ss. Preparatory phase (July-August 2017): All accepted students will receive material for self-study at least one month before the beginning of the course.
