Inhalt:

The seminar examines the political, economic and cultural factors that shape democratic political development. In the first part, we will review
theories of democratization, critical prerequisites and driving social forces of democratic transition, pivotal actors and institutions, and conditions for
democratic survival and consolidation. In the second part, students will analyse empirically how these factors have played a role in some of the regions and countries that have experienced pressure for democratization in recent decades.
On completion of this course, students will be able to relate the political development of different countries to the main theories about democratization and in turn evaluate those theories in light of
empirical data. Successful participants will acquire a thorough appreciation of the possibilities for
and obstacles to democratization, as well as the methodological skills for assessing the quantity and quality of democratic development and its causes and obstacles.
