Compulsory assignment:
A workload of 30 hours equals approx. 1 ECTS. Examples for assignments can be: a written popular scientific press article (eight pages = 1 ECTS), an independent research project, projects in nature conservation, attendance of a scientific conference (each day plus a written summary, two pages = 0,5 ECTS), lectures/poster about scientific research projects on meetings (3 ECTS), planning and organising biological events (e.g. Evolution Day), attendance of scientific lectures (e.g. LSC seminar, 9 lectures = 1 ECTS), attendance of events which are not part of the curriculum (e.g. ornithological excursion on the Bodensee including a protocol = 1,5 ECTS; limnological practical including a protocol = 2 ECTS), lecture/poster in an seminar e.g. in an own series of seminars "Humoldt reloaded" (1,5 ECTS), Wikipedia article covering a research topic (2.000 words = 2 ECTS), improve an existing Wikipedia article (0,5 ECTS), attendance of F.I.T. seminars (ECTS according to certificate of attendance)
Module examination:
When 6 credits are reached, the responsible of the module will grade the assignments. The module is ungraded.
Workload:

Personal contribution: 180 h The workload of each project has to be determined with the responsible of the module.

Professional competences:

The module intends to stimulate independent scientific activities. Activities are defined by the students themselves and approved by the responsible of the module. Potential activities are small research projects, attendance of scientific talks or meetings, writing articles for media, etc. Activities are evaluated by the responsible of the module.

The module intends to promote own scientific activities by the students. Projects shall be conducted by students on their own initiative and documented in written reports. Examples for projects that can be acknowledged are:
- published scientific articles, e.g. on popular science
- research projects
- projects in nature conservation
- participation at scientific conferences
- planning and organization of popular science events, e.g. on evolution
- visit of scientific talks, e.g. seminars of the Life Science Center
- Wikipedia articles on scientific topics

Comments:

The different events take place during the whole lecture period. The assignments can be rendered during the whole study, which means that students can already begin with this module in the first semester.

This module is not relevant for the overall grade.
