The students get a general idea of the key aspects of Earth System Science as well as the definition and the research approach of system science. The interaction of the compartments of the Earth system is demonstrated by a series of lectures focusing on different aspects such as climate change, land use, vegetation and biogeochemical cycles. The contents of the lecture series is set up in each semester according to brand-new topics, e.g. extracted from the media. The predictability of Earth system pro-cesses and the chaotic nature of weather and climate are dis-cussed as well.
