Relation to other Modules:

This module provides the basic knowledge on economics and management that is needed to accomplish the Master Program in Bioeconomy. Due to its introductory character, this module forms the basis for more advanced economic modules such as "Microeconomics", "Agricultural and Food Policy" or "Environmental and Resource Economics".

Prerequisites for Attendance:

See admission regulations for the Master Programme Bioeconomy. This is an introductory module which does not assume any specific background knowledge.

Course "Basic Microeconomics": written exam; course "Corporate Finance": Case study with oral presentation

60 minutes

Workload:

160 h workload = 56 h presence + 104 h preparation at home + exam

Professional competences:

Students are able to explain the basic principles of microeconomic concepts and of corporate finance. In addition, students learn to apply these concepts to complex, real-world situations (investment decisions, market imperfections, policy design, policy distortions). Finally, students are able to analyze the limits of economic concepts and their relevance in contract and policy design.

Key competences:

Critical and analytical thinking.
Application of sound economic and financial reasoning.

Comments:

Learning objectives are enhanced by hand-outs (exercises with solutions) and a voluntary tutorial to help students in the application of economic concepts to real-world problems.
