Students possess an in-depth understanding of the development of economic thought, especially in macroeconomics. Thus, they have a comprehensive knowledge of classical economists such as Smith, Ricardo, Say, and J.S. Mill, as well as their ongoing influence on modern macroeconomics. Students also are familiar with the protagonists of economic thought before World War II (Marshall, Wicksell, Fisher, Schumpeter, Hayek and Keynes). Additionally, an in-depth understanding of the neoclassical synthesis (Hicks, Samuelson, Modigliani) has been acquired and the implications of the monetarist counter-revolution and rational expectations have been discussed. Their know-how includes drawing connections between economic development and the development of economic thought. The acquired knowledge was engrossed by directly dealing with primary literature. They are in a good position to link political debates to the different strands of economic theory.
