- get an overview of the important groups of plant natural products, their distribution, synthesis and function
- extract plant natural products of interest, e.g. with potential bioactivity or function in organismic signalling, or with interesting tissue or time-dependent expression
- get an introduction to planning of experiments concerning the function and/or synthesis of natural compounds and/or the genes/proteins involved in their biosynthesis
- conduct experiments regarding bioactive and/or semiochemical compounds and/or genes/proteins involved in their biosynthesis
- utilise chromatographic techniques for analysis of natural products
- use of spectroscopic techniques for structure elucidation
