Current problems in Earth System Science are introduced and analyzed by the students. Examples are volcanic ash outbreaks, extreme weather events, land-surface-atmosphere exchange, geoengineering. The problems are split with respect to the representation by various disci-plines in Earth System Science and transformed into simple models with non-linear interactions between the components
