The lecture introduces the basic principles of risk theory and actuarial practice. Besides an overview on the German Insurance Market and regulatory issues, the characteristics of different risks and their insurability will be discussed. Subsequently, questions concerning the optimal design of insurance contracts and the use of politically discussed risk characteristics to differentiate premiums will be analysed. Topics like calculation of insurance premiums, spread of risk within the collective, and instruments of risk management will be covered. Finally, reasons for the existence of social insurance will be discussed.
