Based on the theory of public finance and regulatory policy the lecture course on »Market Failure and the Role of Government« deals with various kinds of market failure and with the possibilities of government policy to reduce or eliminate them.
In the first part of the course the general principles of regulatory policy and of public finance are explained. Based on these principles the main sources of market failure like externalities, public goods, monopolistic competition, asymmetric information etc. are discussed. Then suitable policy instruments for the reduction or elimination of such market failures are analyzed. While this part of the lecture course is focussed on allocation policy the following part turns to question of distribution and social justice. Here the various instruments of distribution policy are analyzed on the basis of public finenc theory. - Literature:
