The lecture introduces the structure and institutional framework of the German health insurance system. Besides organisational aspects of the dual health insurance system, which consists of the Statutory Health insurance (SHI) and the Private Health Insurance (PHI), the lecture focuses on issues like optimal designs of insurance contracts, calculation of insurance premiums and competition within the PHI.
In the field of the SHI problems of incentive-compatible and sustainable designs of financing health care costs will be discussed. An outlook on selected international health insurance systems closes the lecture. - Literature:
