Regional policies play a very important role in the EU member countries and especially the EU Commission. The increase of welfare in the regions and the catch-up of underdeveloped regions is to be accomplished by attaining innovation goals. The economic competetivness of a region is closely related to the knowledge infrastructure of a region and its knowledge base. Thus, regional policy measures aim at the regional innovation potential for the long-term increase of the per capita income. In the lecture, the most important economic theories of regional development are presented and applied to the increasing divergence of the regional per capita income in Europe.
